Is There Healing in Mysticism?

Shamanic healing is a spiritual and energetic method of healing that deals with the spiritual aspect of illness.
There are three common causes of illness, in the shaman's worldview.
A person may have lost his or her power, causing depression, chronic illness, or a series of misfortunes.
In this case, the shaman journeys to restore that person's lost power.
Over tens of thousands of years, mankind's ancient ancestors all over the world discovered how to maximize human abilities of mind and spirit for healing and problem-solving.

This remarkable system of methods has developed into what is know today as "shamanism," a term that comes from a Siberian tribal word for its practitioners: "shaman" (pronounced SHAH-mahn). The word shaman comes through Russian from the Evenk people of Siberia (referred to as Tungus by Russians). It is sometimes spelled saman, but shaman is more accurate. For much too long, Spirit has been left out of Western medicine. Now's a chance to bring Spirit back and assist in healing and living a longer, healthier life - through these shamans' ancient healing practices.

The Circle of the Healing Drum will be exploring and teaching these principals in their inaugural workshop event, "Healing Through Mysticism", on February 5th, 2005.

Are You Gambling With Your Life By Self Medicating?

Many people self-medicate because they feel they can't afford the medications that are commonly used to treat bipolar disorder; however, in nearly all cases there is aid available to those with mental illness who need reduced price or free medications.Others who are bipolar may self-medicate after years of medical care because of frustration stemming from the need to periodically readjust medications - they may feel that since the doctors can't seem to get it right, they can probably "experiment" with it just as well themselves. This is extremely dangerous, though, because even small changes in drugs like Lithium and other drugs can lead to serious episodes or worse. With Lithium, small changes in dosage can lead to hallucinations, severe illness and even death. For this reason Lithium use should always be carefully monitored by a doctor with regular blood tests. If you self medicate incorrectly, you risk your life and you risk your health.Others "self medicate" by using alcohol or drugs...

Helping Your Child Cope With A Long-Term Illness

All children will likely have many different health problems during infancy and childhood: the flu, chicken pox, broken bones, stitches, ear infections, to name a few. For most children, these problems are mild ? they come and go without incident and with little disruption in a child's daily life or routine. A chronic long-term medical problem is different and often doesn't come alone, as children with serious medical illnesses are at risk of developing associated emotional problems. Learning to live with a chronic medical condition can be very challenging for a child, for parents, and for siblings and friends, and can lead to feelings of anger, fear and depression. The way children react to diagnosis with a chronic illness depends on several factors, including the child's personality, the specific illness, family emotional dynamic, and the child's age and emotional maturity.

A smaller child may react aggressively as they begin to cope with changes in schedule due to hospital...
